Why Are Stainless Steel Pipe Fittings Used in Liquid Cooling System?

In today's era of rapid technological advancements and exponentially increasing computing power demands, liquid cooling systems, as a key solution for efficient heat dissipation, face an urgent need to replace their "blood vessels"—the piping. Traditional piping is increasingly inadequate for handling the demanding heat dissipation conditions brought about by high computing power. So, among numerous piping options, why has stainless steel piping stood out and become the new standard for liquid cooling systems? Let's delve into this question together.

Liquid Cooling Piping System Architecture The liquid cooling piping system is like the human circulatory system, serving as a crucial link connecting the cold source, heat source, and circulation device. It mainly consists of coolant, piping, cold plates, pumps, and heat exchangers. The coolant circulates within the piping, transferring the heat generated by the equipment to the cold plates. The pumps then transport the heated coolant to the heat exchangers for heat dissipation. The cooled liquid returns to the piping, and this cycle repeats continuously, achieving efficient heat dissipation.

The coolant piping is divided into two independent loops:

① Primary Side (Cold Source Side) Piping:

Connects the outdoor cold source (cooling tower, dry cooler, etc.) to the primary side interface of the CDU. Its main function is to transfer coolant between the cold source and the CDU, completing the heat dissipation to the outside.

② Secondary Side (IT Side) Piping:

Connects the CDU's secondary side interface to the liquid-cooled cabinet/IT heat dissipation terminal (cold plate, immersion chamber, etc.). Its main function is to transfer coolant between the CDU and IT equipment, completing the collection of IT heat.

Why Use Stainless Steel Piping for Coolant Lines in Liquid Cooling Systems?

In long-term operation of fluorinated liquid cooling systems, ordinary metal pipes may corrode within months, while stainless steel pipes can last for years or even longer.

Corrosion Resistance

Stainless steel (such as 304 and 316L) has a dense chromium oxide passivation film on its surface. In fluorinated liquid cooling systems, this film can block corrosive media such as chloride ions mixed in the fluorinated liquid, acidic organic matter produced by the decomposition of additives, and hydrofluoric acid generated by the reaction with water, preventing pipe wall corrosion.

Pressure and Temperature Resistance

Liquid cooling lines in data centers or supercomputing centers need to withstand high-pressure cycles and equipment vibration. The high strength and toughness of stainless steel pipes can prevent deformation or cracking, while also withstanding high-temperature environments, ensuring stable system operation.

Safety and Lifespan

Stainless steel is non-toxic and odorless. Unlike galvanized steel pipes, it will not produce heavy metal pollution due to zinc layer dissolution, nor will it release plasticizers (such as phthalates) at high temperatures like plastic pipes. It is also resistant to aging and fatigue, with a service life far exceeding that of rubber or plastic pipes.

Low permeability and high purity

Liquid cooling systems have extremely high requirements for coolant purity. Stainless steel tubing, through precision welding and surface treatment processes, has extremely low permeability, preventing microporous penetration that could lead to coolant deterioration or equipment damage.

As liquid cooling technology evolves towards higher power and longer lifespan, stainless steel pipe fittings, with their excellent pressure resistance, corrosion resistance, and low flow resistance, have become the inevitable choice for high-computing-power applications. When selecting the right type, wall thickness, and pipe diameter based on the application scenario, and paying attention to the processing technology and surface treatment, you can ensure the long-term stable operation of the liquid cooling system.
