What size carbonation stone do I need?
|Tank Size ||Stone Size|
|15Gal-1BBL ||4" Stone|
|Sunthai Valve Co., Ltd has 4", 6", 8", 12", and 300mm models. The connection port is 1/4" NPT, TC=50.5mm |
Carbonation stones are most effective from 0.5 to 3 microns. Any smaller and the stone becomes clogged too easily by proteins and organic material, any higher and the bubbles are too large and won't dissolve into the product resulting in uneven foaming of your beer.
The beer needs to be cold, between 34 and 40 °F.
Attach the stone so that it is at or near the bottom of the keg.
Start with no pressure on the regulator and increase to 1-2 psi and let sit for about 4-5 minutes. You should hear the bubbles in the keg.
Repeat the pressure increase in 1-2 psi increments waiting 4-5 minutes between increases until you are about 14-16 psi.
Try a sample glass. If this is the desired carbonation level, you can either remove or leave in the stone and back pressure down to serving psi. If not, keep increasing the psi in 1-2 psi increments till you get your desired level.
PS: Using a carbonation stone will cut down the time needed to carbonate the beer to about 1/2 hour.
How to clean carbonation stones?
After use, the carbonation stone should soak in brewery wash or similar product for at least 24 hours. After a good long soak, rinse with warm water while attaching the stone to a CO2 line to push all residual material and brewery wash out of the stone's porous body.
